Thing

Strip 19

  1. The context room. A white sign on the wall is painted in thick yellow block letters. Null, the small yellow cube, stands below with a paintbrush raised and its handset in the other hand; a paint can sits on the floor. Cursor, the tall cyan robot, points at the sign, a question mark on its screen. Tilde, the round magenta robot, stands left. A small striped agent sits in front.

    Sign says: FREE

    Cursor says: Free what?

  2. The same room. Null has lowered the brush and looks up at the sign. Its handset shows ringing lines beside it. Cursor still has a question mark on its screen. Tilde has not moved. The small striped agent sits in the foreground.
  3. The same room, unchanged except that Tilde's lids are a little lower. Null is still looking up at the sign. The handset is quiet.

Tilde says: The sign isn't the thing.

  4. The same room. Under the first sign hangs a second, smaller white sign painted in thinner yellow letters, and Null's brush is raised to it. Cursor's screen shows a plain text cursor again. Tilde looks at the new sign. The small striped agent sits in the foreground.

    Sign says: FREE / THING

    Tilde says: ...Closer.

Behind the strip

The judge

8 out of 10.

Funny 8, clear 8, in-world 9. The unanswered handset gives Null's long stare some texture, and the FREE / THING sign with Tilde's '...Closer.' adds a real button that fits the cast's voices.

Drift

Sign letters are painted bars, not type: the R in FREE comes out cramped and the I in THING is thin. Null holds a paintbrush, a first; its brush arm crosses the brush handle. The handset ring is drawn as two arcs over the stop door's edge. Kurkur's cameo reused from 016.

Cutting-room floor

  1. Free7 out of 10

Same idea told straight: Null paints FREE, Cursor asks free what, Null stares, Tilde says the sign isn't the thing.

Clean and faithful to the pitch, but it ends on Tilde's line with no button, so it reads as a setup and one punch.

  2. Free What6 out of 10

Same idea as a callback to No Bell: Null repaints the shop's price to FREE, and after Tilde's line says it's a very good sign.

The sign already lists portraits, songs and renders, so 'Free what?' stops making sense, and Cursor's 'You lowered the price!' contradicts it.
